Dr. von Gruenigen, who currently serves as the chair of the department of OB/GYN and the medical director for women's health at Summa Health , will replace Dr. Erik Steele starting July 5. Steele plans to return to New England to be closer to family, according to a news release.
As CMO and member of the leadership team, Dr. von Gruenigen will provide medical oversight, expertise and leadership to ensure quality and support Summa's vision for population health.
“As the chair of the department of OB/GYN and the medical director for women’s health at Summa, Dr. von Gruenigen has demonstrated her ability to help lead our organization toward its goal of improving the health of our community,” Dr. Thomas Malone, Summa Health president and CEO, said in a statement. “The role of chief medical officer is critical to our population health management strategy, and her vision and leadership will be instrumental as we continuously seek to improve the quality of our services through a more patient-centered approach to healthcare.”
Dr. von Gruenigen, who joined Summa in 2009, recently received her Certified Physician Executive certification from the American College of Physician Executives, according to a news release. In addition to her position as a member of the Board of Directors for The Foundation for Exxcellence in Women's Health, she also serves on the boards of the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, Society of Gynecologic Oncologists and American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Foundation.
She earned her bachelor's in nursing from Ohio State University, and an M.D. from Wright State University with honors.
She completed her OB/GYN residency at Summa Akron City Hospital and fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Texas, Southwestern, according to the news release.
